A few years ago Liz Houghton focused her business on heling older adults find and move into the right home for the next chapter of their lives - which often included handling life's collections of "stuff" - AKA treasured belongings in a dignified and caring way.
Later we were called upon to take care of a few updates - and then later to renovate an entire kitchen - in order to sell the property for the best possible price. Sometimes the proceeds from the sale are needed for long term care for the person whose home we are selling - or for a surviving spouse.
We came to realize just how important it is to be able to advise clients on their options and only when we were sure that was done, sell their much-loved homes in a way that best equipped them for their future.
As this set of skills grew, along with the team of people upon whom we relied to provide a superior level of service, we were referred to a lady whose husband had recently passed. She was in poor health herself and being pressured by hopefully well meaning family members to make decisions she was not yet able - or ready - to make.
And, we quickly recognized she had many of the same questions - and needs - as other clients we had helped move to a senior living community for instance.
When going through a life changing event you need more than a real estate agent that puts a sign in the yard, pictures on the internet and sells the house without any real consideration of whether it is in fact the best course of action for you. We believe there are often many things to consider first. Perhaps selling is not the best choice. We will never pressure you to do anything. That is our promise.
Perhaps it is possible to stay safe in your own home if a qualified senior home safety inspector can assess the space in and around your home to help eliminate trip hazards or other dangers enabling you to live there safely into the future.
Perhaps it would be better to keep the home in the family or rent it out as an income stream to help you pay for future expenses.
We can help with all of that by exploring your options with you and providing you with the information you need before making such an important decision.
And if selling is the best thing to do, that opens up a few more questions.
There are many things to decide and it can easily become overwhelming and lead to procrastination. The risk of doing nothing is that someone else may make these important decisions for you - which may lead to you being somewhere you don't want to be. We want to avoid that for you.
Let's chat about your goals and current situation even if you are a year or more away from making a decision. Afterall how can you decide anything without knowing your options.
P.S. Managing the types of things listed here on this page is a definition of Senior Move Management.
